Lead crisis in New Jersey

A park is closed because of lead concerns.

The lead crisis throughout New Jersey is coming to light. A Jersey City park remains closed after Hudson County health officials discovered lead paint chips last week.

Mary Benson Park is in the heart of downtown Jersey City and Emily Campbell, a concerned mother, said her son loves playing in the park and she is very concerned. This park was shut down in 2012 for the same problem. Officials believe the paint chips came from construction on the nearby New Jersey Turnpike.

The news comes as Newark Public Schools students are being tested for lead exposure after high levels of lead were found in the water at 30 district schools.

Doctors say lead poisoning can affect a child's behavior and ability to learn. Studies show a correlation between lead poisoning and criminal activity.
