White lesbian teacher sues for discrimination

A lawsuit against the Paterson Board of Education alleges the district and district employees discriminated against a tenured teacher because she is a white lesbian.

Noreen Sweeney filed the lawsuit April 20.

According to her attorney Jason Nunnermacker, Sweeney was reassigned to the "rubber room" in 2014 while the district investigated allegedly inappropriate comments she made about Amod Field, vice principal of the International High School, where she worked.

The lawsuit said the remarks referred to administrators being overpaid, abuse of power, and the beating of a female student when Field was principal. Nunnermacker said the comments were not vulgar or sexual in nature but simply questioned his credibility.

Sweeney has been cleared of the allegations and was reassigned as a teaching assistant. District spokeswoman Terry Corallo said the district does not comment on pending litigation.
