Monday is 'National Pumpkin Day'

According to NationalDayCalendar.com, National Pumpkin Day is observed annually on October 26. 
 
According to the site, people across the nation enjoy cake, pie, cookies, bars, pudding, coffee, smoothies, candy, breads. muffins, soups, cheesecake, oatmeal, lasagna and more, all made with delicious pumpkin.
 
Officials say the word pumpkin originates from the word pepon, which is Greek for “large melon”.
 
Here are some exciting pumpkin facts: 
 
1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are produced in the United States each year.
 
Canned pumpkin may be recommended by veterinarians as a dietary supplement for dogs and cats that are experiencing certain digestive ailments.
 
Raw pumpkin can be fed to poultry as a supplement to their regular feed during the winter months to help maintain egg production.
 
Pumpkins are well known for being carved into  jack-o-lanterns at Halloween.
