LOS ANGELES, CA - London is mostly known for Big Ben, tea time and The Queen. But the new Mayor just did something else to put London on the right side of history. He has banned ads promoting unhealthy body image.
A recent ad that hit the streets of London had a young, thin model in a bright yellow bikini. It read “Are you beach body ready?” The ad was for dietary supplements made by a company called Protein World and was defaced in subway stations across the city. London’s new mayor, Sadiq Khan said “As the father of two teenage girls, I am extremely concerned about this kind of advertising, which can demean people, particularly women, and makes them ashamed of their bodies...Nobody should feel pressurized, while they travel on the Tube or bus, into unrealistic expectations surrounding their bodies.”
The ban, which will be enforced starting in July, is the latest move in an effort by European authorities and others to address their concerns about unrealistic or unhealthy body images in advertising and the effect they have on the health of consumers. France, Italy, Spain, and Israel have enforced policies aimed at preventing models who are dangerously thin from working in the industry. While these bold moves are getting mixed reviews from some, we think it is a great step against fat shaming.
