National Pets Day: Exotic animals people really keep as pets

- April 11 is National Pet Day, but not every “pet” is a dog or a cat. Here are some of the strangest pets you’ll ever see that people really do have.

The capybara is the world’s largest rodent. In their native South America, they’re more likely to be eaten than kept as pets, but some people do keep these docile fellows around for their company.

Most people wouldn’t think of insects as pets, but the stick insect is becoming more and more popular, especially for children, since they’re easy to take care of.

Potbellied pigs can be as adorable and intelligent as dogs. Just make sure you know what you’re getting, since some people are shocked when their tiny piglets turn into full-sized hogs.

Some people keep sugar gliders as pets. Take one look at these adorable marsupials and it’s easy to tell why. But while these little guys look cute, they also have sharp claws and teeth.

Speaking of marsupials, some people even have wallabies as pets. They’re a little like tiny kangaroos, and require a lot of space. They’re nocturnal too, so you better be ready for them to be hopping around at night.

There are lots of different pets you can have, but it’s important to make sure you have the time, knowledge, and resources to properly care for any pet. That goes for if it’s a dog, a cat, a bird, or even a scorpion.
