Viral photo of female soccer referee inspiring young fan

We never know just who will inspire us or when inspiration will occur. But when it does happen, it’s something we will always remember. One father was lucky enough to capture that precise moment his little girl was inspired at a soccer match. However, it wasn’t a player -- It was the female referee.

Nathan Walker took his 4-year-old daughter, Clara, to see a game featuring the Garforth Town Association Football Club. During one of the injury breaks, his daughter became fascinated with the female referee on the field. Walker tweeted the photo, and and his tweet is continuing to inspire thousands.

His caption read, “Daughter was delighted to see this assistant referee today ‘her hair is like mine, can I be a referee?’”

And you can’t blame her for being in awe. Female referees aren’t exactly commonplace in professional sports -- Especially at the highest levels.

According to ESPN, it wasn’t until 2015 that the NFL hired its first female referee. Meanwhile the NBA has had three, and the NHL and MLB have only had one, according to Female Officials History.

In years to come, Clara may not remember the score of the game, however, she’ll certainly remember the referee who was just like her.
