Day and Trump score big at Barclay's Golf Tournament

- Jason Day followed up his third-round 7 under par performance with a fourth-round 8 under par masterpiece to go on and win the Barclay’s Tournament at the Plainfield Country Club, with a six stroke -19 under par victory over Henrik Stenson. The victory is the first of the four PGA FedExCup Playoff Tournaments.

The 19th hole, which is usually celebrated after the day’s golfing event, seemed to hit the course early, as hundreds of golfing fans flocked around 2016 Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump.

Trump’s appearance seemed to be the real bonus round of the day, as well-wishers followed the Donald and lined up to shake a hand or take a selfie.

“It’s exciting to have republican candidate Donald Trump here at the Barclay’s,” said South Plainfield Republican Mayor Matthew Anesh. “I tweeted him an invite to our South Plainfield Labor Day Parade next week, I hope he can make a second trip to Central New Jersey.”

The 2015 Barclay’s Tournament was not only a $1,485,000 victory for Jason Day, but it was also a victory for event organizers and golfing enthusiasts throughout central New Jersey and the New York Metropolitan area.

The last Barclay’s tournament at the Plainfield Country Club in 2011 was cut short by Hurricane Irene, but with perfect weather and Donald Trump roaming the golf course event organizers could not have planned a better Sunday final.

South Plainfielders who came out all week to get a glimpse of the biggest names in golf were able to see themselves on TV, having dinner and drinks with some of golf’s biggest names and of course have a selfie with Trump. It certainly was a week South Plainfield would remember for a long time.

Friday night at KC’s Korner there was standing room only in the bar and on the patio as ESPN and golfing great Nick Faldo tried his luck at KC’s patio bar. “Faldo really had a great time here Friday night,” said Jerry Tanzola. “He was real down to earth. He had a few beers, took a few photos, but was able to have a nice night out.”

The Barclay’s Tournament started in South Plainfield and Edison much sooner than Thursday morning’s tee off. Event planning has been going on for years, and the traffic detours were put in place Monday, Aug. 24 to the chagrin of commuters and residents living all along Woodland Avenue and the northern sections of South Plainfield.

“While a number of residents have been inconvenienced, I think the opportunity to have the world’s greatest golfers showcased here in Edison and South Plainfield is just great,” Anesh said. “It may be difficult to quantify which businesses in the area benefitted the most, but I know a number of establishments experienced increased activity throughout the week.”

“There were traffic delays along Park Avenue, but all in all the plan worked,” said South Plainfield Police Chief and OEM Coordinator James Parker. “We had over 25,000 people attending a relatively small local venue. Keeping the residents and all of the visitors safe is most important. We also strive to keep inconveniences to a minimum, and I think we were able to achieve both goals.”
