For the past several weeks Sparta police officers have been training to use body-worn cameras.

The six units have been purchased “in a continuing effort to best serve our community by providing the highest level of public safety possible by utilizing the latest technology,” according to a statement made by Sgt John P Beebe. An additional six BWCs have been ordered, each at a cost of $450.

Sparta Township Manager Bill Close had announced the purchase of the body cameras at a June Township Council meeting.

Sparta Police Department has chosen L3 BWC to supply the units. Located in Boonton, the company manufactures and will service the cameras. They are the same company that installed and maintains the eight mobile video recorders currently in use in Sparta’s police cars.

The L3 BWC is a wireless unit that has a video camera along with audio and video recording hardware. There is also a port built in for charging and downloading.
