'Tie a Ribbon' for Breast Cancer in Verona
Verona, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Breast cancer survivor Andonia Scoropanos wants to spread the word about the importance of early screening in the detection of breast cancer. With this in mind, she has helped bring the “Tie a Ribbon” Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign to Verona.
On Wednesday night, Scoropanos was joined by Deputy Mayor Michael Nochimson, Councilman Alex Roman and Interim Town Manager Mitchell Stern as they began tying 10-foot-long hot pink ribbons on trees along Bloomfield Avenue.
As she approaches the one-year anniversary of her diagnosis, Scoropanos says she hopes the ribbons will remind women to get screened and also educate them on the services that are available to them through the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
“I volunteer because I am a recent one-year breast cancer survivor. I do this to support early detection, which is the way I was diagnosed, through my first mammogram,” Scoropanos said. “They (Komen Foundation) were very supportive with anything I needed, any services I needed after my surgery. I just want people to know that you’re not alone there are resources out there and Komen is one those companies that will support you.”
