Disabled dogs trained to work as therapy dogs at Torrance rescue shelter

- From being partially paralyzed to being abused and thrown away, these disabled dogs have been given a second chance at life thanks to Audrey McCabe and Susan Fulcher, founders of Dharma Rescue in Torrance.

“There’s days when you totally want to give up because there is no finances," McCabe said. "Everything is just so tough and times are getting even tougher, then you look at their faces and that is what gives you that energy to keep going and that faith and belief to keep going."

Various dogs have been trained to help those in need as therapy dogs. As therapy dogs, they visit schools and provide relief for children with learning disabilities, behavioral problems and autism.

According to Fulcher, the dogs know exactly where to go and what to do with the kids when they enter a room.

“They know they have a job. It’s amazing,” Fulcher added.

Due to expenses that range from medical bills to custom made wheelchairs and training the dogs, Dharma Rescue needs all the help they can get.

“Unconditional love and gratitude is what they give back” said McCabe.
