Daily views of Earth available on 'EPIC' new website

- A NOAA satellite is now offering daily 'blue marble' views of Earth.

The Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) monitors a number of space weather events from almost a million miles away.  It also carries a NASA camera, known as the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC), pointing back at Earth.

The satellite is sending back unique views of the planet -- each the equivalent of a 12-megapixel photo -- and NASA is now showcasing the imagery on a new website.

The idea of a live camera in space was proposed several years ago by then-Vice President Al Gore.  He was on hand for the satellite's launch from Cape Canaveral in February, and he tweeted congratulations to the team when the website went live this week.

While the images of Earth are not posted quite live, NASA says the site will feature at least a dozen new images every day, and older images will be archived.
