Homeless vet, couple in viral campaign faked story: Report

- A news conference is scheduled for Thursday afternoon by the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office to announce findings in an investigation of a homeless veteran and the couple who raised money for him through a GoFundMe campaign.

There is an unconfirmed report that the trio had actually planned the scam together.

Approximately $400,000 was raised on his behalf.

Johnny Bobbitt Jr. gained worldwide attention when he used his last $20 to fill up the gas tank of stranded motorist Kate McClure in November 2017.

The story first took a strange twist when the veteran said the one-time Good Samaritans refused to hand over the money.

Bobbitt said McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D'Amico, gave him $25,000, but that he had given it away to relatives and used it for himself including for drugs.

The couple also bought Bobbitt a camper with some of the funds and parked it on land McClure's family owns in New Jersey. But Bobbitt became homeless again after D'Amico told him in June that he had to leave the property.

Bobbitt’s attorney, Jacqueline Promislo, told The New York Post that the couple started to spend the money right after depositing it into their bank account on expensive shoes and pricey vacations.

In September, police raided the couple's home.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office has been investigating the case.

McClure and D'Amico turned themselves in to Burlington County prosecutors on Wednesday, the reportedly the Daily Mail.
