Strong winds were fanning the flames of a massive fire that started in a warehouse in Somerset County, New Jersey. The inferno broke out Thursday afternoon and was still burning Friday morning at Veterans Industrial Park on Route 206.

At least one firefighter suffered a leg injury at the scene in Hillsborough.  PHOTOS: WAREHOUSE FIRE

The 300,000-square-foot complex comprised of four buildings is formally the Defense Logistics Agency Depot, which once housed 12,500 barrels of mercury since the early 1940s, reports NJ.com.

By late Friday morning, the blaze had been contained to two buildings in the complex.

The Environmental Protection Agency is monitoring air quality conditions as the winds from the west shift the smoke-filled air east.

One warehouse was destroyed. Schools were closed in the township an all after-school events were canceled.

It is not clear what sparked the blaze. Route 206 had been closed but reopened Friday.
