Two Floyd County Police Officers were honored Wednesday for saving the life of a woman who was shot five times during an argument.

In May, Beverly Broach visited her daughter and son-in-law, at a home on Foster Mill Road in Rome. While Broach visited, police said Dewayne Tanner shot Broach’s daughter, Stephanie Tanner during an argument.

Broach was also shot five times when she tried to protect her daughter. However, she was able to call 911 and communicate with dispatchers about what happened at the home.

"I wanted to make sure it was known what happened, who did it, and I was not expecting to live through that," Broach said.

Officer Chad Matthews and Officer Donald Holbrook  responded to that 911 call and saw Beverly on the front porch bleeding out. The officers rushed to her side, even though they didn’t know where the suspect was at the time.

"They holstered guns and knocked down gate to pull me off the porch otherwise I wouldn't be alive," Broach said.

Dewayne Tanner was arrested and charged with murder. He is currently awaiting trial.

Officer Matthews and Officer Holbrook were recognized as 'Officers of the Year' for their response to the call at a luncheon Wednesday at the Law Enforcement Center in downtown Rome. Beverly Broach attended the ceremony, and was able to thank the men for saving her life.
