Wayzata Police Officer Bill Mathews funeral

Wayzata Police Officer William "Bill" Mathews, who was fatally struck by a vehicle on Highway 12 last week, will be laid to rest on Thursday in Wayzata, Minnesota. The public is welcome to attend the services, which will be broadcast live on Fox 9 beginning at 11 a.m., staying on-air until the conclusion of services. 2,000 BLUE ROSES

Volunteers with Backing the Blue Line spent Wednesday evening systematically removing the thorns, spray painting petals blue and attaching cards onto 2,000 roses bearing the fallen officer's badge number. Backing the Blue Line is mostly made of women married to officers in the west metro, but also as far as Beltrami County. WATCH STORY

Procession Route

After the funeral service, there will be two processions that will go through Plymouth and Wayzata on the way to Summit Park Cemetery for the burial. Hundreds of law enforcement and other agencies will take part in the first procession. Following about 20 to 30 minutes later, a second procession made up of Wayzata law enforcement, Wayzata Fire Department, Long Lake Fire Department and Officer Mathews' family and Officer Mathews will leave the church. 

The procession route will leave the Wayzata Free Church and head south on County Road 101 to Wayzata Boulevard. It will then go west on Superior Boulevard and continue west on Lake Street. The route will head north on Ferndale Road North and finally west again on Wayzata Boulevard where it will continue until it reaches the cemetery.

Road closures on County Road 101

City officials are warning there will be heavy traffic along County Road 101 in Plymouth on Wednesday and Thursday due to the services and are asking people to use different routes. Starting at noon on Wednesday, only one lane will be open County Road 101 from 14th Avenue N to 1st Avenue N. All lanes of 101 will be closed on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Click here for a map of the closed section.

City offices closed on Thursday

In honor of Officer Matthews, city offices in Wayzata will be closed on Thursday. This includes City Hall and Public Works, both which will reopen on Friday at 7 a.m. Wayzata Motor Vehicle will also be closed on Thursday and will reopen on Friday at 7:30 a.m.

Both Wayzata Bar & Grill and Wayzata Wine & Spirits will be closed during the day on Thursday, but will reopen at 4 p.m.

Mutual aid will answer emergency calls for Wayzata Fire and Police on Thursday.
