TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey Assembly panel has advanced a bill to
overhaul teacher tenure.
Lawmakers in both chambers of the Legislature approved bills that would make
it tougher to attain tenure and easier to lose it.
While similar, the bills had some technical differences on issues such as
which arbitration board would hear disputes and how long they would have to do
Assemblyman Pat Diegnan, the sponsor of the Assembly version, said Thursday
night that he had ironed out the differences with Senate counterpart Teresa
The Assembly Budget Committee passed the compromise bill unanimously
The bill heads for final legislative votes Monday.
The concept has been a contentions one. But the compromise has gained broad
support — including from teachers' unions.
