NJ bracing for extreme heat, high humidity

Posted: Updated:

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Heat-related advisories were in effect for most of New Jersey on Saturday, as residents braced for a nasty mix of scorching temperatures and high humidity.

Residents were urged to stay indoors in air-conditioned areas if possible, while cooling centers were being set up at schools and other community sites. Many people planned to go to malls or movie theaters in a bid to stay cool.

Temperatures of more than 100 degrees were forecast in most of the state, with heat indexes ranging from 105 to 115 degrees. Urban areas were under excessive heat warnings, while heart advisories were in effect for most other areas.

Meanwhile, utility crews were still working to restore electric service to customers in southern New Jersey who lost power when severe storms hit last weekend.
