VERNON TOWNSHP, N.J.
(AP) — Environmental officials say a dog that was initially reported to
have been killed by a black bear outside a northern New Jersey home may
have died from other unknown causes.
Authorities are still probing the reported attack, which occurred around 10 a.m. Tuesday in Vernon Township.
witness told police that the dog, a Husky, had been chasing after the
bear before the bruin attacked it. The bear had fled the scene by the
time officers arrived.
Larry Hajna (HAY'-nah), a spokesman for the
state Department of Environmental Protection, told The Star-Ledger
(http://bit.ly/MGgbcX) that there were no visible signs of external
injuries on the dog. So officials are still trying to determine what
caused its death.
