VERNON TOWNSHP, N.J. (AP) — Environmental officials say a dog that was initially reported to have been killed by a black bear outside a northern New Jersey home may have died from other unknown causes.

Authorities are still probing the reported attack, which occurred around 10 a.m. Tuesday in Vernon Township.

A witness told police that the dog, a Husky, had been chasing after the bear before the bruin attacked it. The bear had fled the scene by the time officers arrived.

Larry Hajna (HAY'-nah), a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, told The Star-Ledger ( that there were no visible signs of external injuries on the dog. So officials are still trying to determine what caused its death.
