Thousands without power as severe storms sock NJ

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Hazy, hot and humid conditions across New Jersey are giving way to severe thunderstorms that have knocked out power to thousands of residents across the state.

The storms containing heavy rains, strong winds and hail were moving through the region late Wednesday afternoon, knocking down trees and power lines. Jersey Central Power and Light reported nearly 17,000 customers had no power, while roughly 15,000 PSE&G customers were without service.

The storms, though, helped end the state's most recent heat wave. Temperatures in most areas had soared into the high 90s by early Wednesday afternoon, while heat indexes reached as high as 107 degrees in some spots.

Temperatures were expected to return to normal on Thursday, with highs expected in the upper 80s.
