NJ's 2nd largest city to swear in 29 firefighters

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey's second largest city is swearing in a new class of firefighters on Monday.

Jersey City will welcome 29 new firefighters to its force.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy says they're being funded in part by an $8.2 million federal SAFER grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA.

Healy says the city has had to supplement its fire department due to a large number of recent retirements.

The new firefighters were trained during a 10-week course at the Morris County Fire Academy.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place Monday morning at city hall in Jersey City.
