WOOLWICH TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Authorities in southern New Jersey are investigating a homemade bomb that exploded in the mailbox of a local official.

First-term Republican freeholder Larry Wallace tells the Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/P3UFR0) he discovered the destroyed mailbox early Thursday near his home in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County.

The 50-year-old Wallace said the bomb was in a soda bottle.

It isn't known what time the bomb detonated.

Wallace said his two teenage daughters were home at the time and frequently go outside to pick up the mail.
