Authorities: Driver fleeing police hits, kills man

EAST ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — Prosecutors have filed aggravated manslaughter charges against a driver who allegedly was fleeing from police when he struck and killed a man walking his dog on a northern New Jersey street.

Tariq Sewell also faces numerous other charges, including death by auto and heroin possession.

Authorities say the 26-year-old Union Township man was speeding and driving with a suspended license when he hit 55-year-old Darroll Morris of East Orange around 6:30 a.m. Monday. But they wouldn't say why police were pursuing him.

Morris was pronounced dead at the scene, and his dog, a Shih-Tzu, also was killed. The accident occurred less than a block from Morris' home.

Sewell was captured shortly after the crash. Five other people were in his car, including a teenage girl, but none have been charged.
