Mantoloking begins demolishing homes

Posted: Updated:

MANTOLOKING, N.J. (AP) — Workers have started demolishing the first of 50 storm-damaged homes in the Jersey shore town that was hit hardest by Superstorm Sandy.

A giant crane in Mantoloking is scooping what's left of a house that was floating in Barnegat Bay next to the Mantoloking Bridge.

Demolition of scores of other homes in the Ocean County town will begin next week.

The work was initially delayed by rain and the lack of an air quality monitoring team.

All of Mantoloking's 521 homes were either damaged or destroyed by the storm, which cut a new channel from the ocean to the Barnegat Bay.

The town will be one of the Jersey shore spots that Britain's Prince Harry will visit next week.
