Search For Three Suspected Bank Robbers Shuts Down Lower Merion

LOWER MERION, Pa. -

A manhunt in Montgomery County locks down Rosemont College and Villanova University

And that search continued into the night.

It all began with a robbery on the 1800 block of East High Street in Pottstown.

It started at a bank in Lower Pottsgrove Township and ended up in Lower Merion.

Police say the suspects robbed a bank and a customer making a deposit.

This usually quiet neighborhood in Lower Merion was crawling with cops Wednesday afternoon. As police, with guns drawn, launched an intense search for three people they say robbed a bank.

"All of a sudden there was like 30 cop cars that came racing up the road."

Jeff Barton was gardening at a client's home in the neighborhood when a cop approached him.

"He's all loaded with a shotgun and he's like you gotta get in the house there's armed men around here."

The search centered around Greenwood Court off Montgomery Road where police and K-9, after several hours, located and arrested three people. Police also recovered a Hyundai Sonata they say is the getaway car.

According to Tim Walters of Lower Pottsgrove Township Police Department, "I have no idea why they got here I can only think they were trying to elude the officers and get into a heavily congested area."

The robbery happened just before three p.m. at National Penn bank on East High Street in Lower Pottsgrove Township. An off-duty Upper Merion Officer spotted the car on Route 422 and alerted other police to Lower Merion where the suspects ended up.

According to resident Nicole Sutliff, "I just see cops walking around with rifles next to two houses down from my house."

Nicole Sutliff is one of many people who couldn't get to her house for hours because police locked down the area.

"A little bit scary you don't really see that on the Mainline too often."

Police say they found evidence relating to the bank robbery but wouldn't say specifically if it included the guns used in the holdup.

They also say there's no credible evidence to support rumors that there is a fourth suspect still on the loose.
