Heroin overdoses spike

Asbury Park, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

83 people have died from drug overdoses in Ocean County in 2013.  That is compared to the 53 overdose related deaths in all of 2012.

Joseph Coronato, the Ocean County Prosecutor, who is going after dealers and wants to hold them accountable for those deaths – a first degree crime that has a 20 year maximum sentence.

Coronato says, “What we’re doing here is holding people accountable for their actions.”

And when he finds a victim, they not only look at it as a crime scene, but also as a murder.

Patty DiRenzo's son, Salvatore Marchese, died of a heroin overdose about three years ago.

DiRenzo isn’t sure this is the right solution to the problem saying, “The dealers will always be out there dealing, I don’t know if it’s going to change anything.”

And at the end of the day, prosecuting dealers for those deaths will not bring her son back.

“In the long run it may have given me peace at the moment, but would it have brought Sal back? No,” DiRenzo says.
