Army Mom Returns Home Early And Surprises Daughter

Posted: Updated:

13-year-old Bella Lund was at a Wisconsin Badgers football game. Then, in front of 80,000 fans, her mom, who she thought was still on duty in Afghanistan, came out onto the field and greeted her.

Bella ran to her mom and they embraced, to the cheers, roars and tears of all the fans.

Her mom, Army Captain Jane Renee "JR" Lund, was finishing up a six month tour in Afghanistan as a veterinarian after four years of service in the Army Reserves. In Southern Afghanistan, Lund helped train veterinarians and set up government-sponsored programs for villagers. She was supposed to return in October, but got to come back a little early. That's when a friend and volunteer at the football games suggested the idea. They soon got in touch with the college athletics department and started planning.

Lund spent the Friday closing a deal on a new house for her and her daughter, and then she hid during the first half of the game on Saturday. Bella thought that she was just being honored as a Badgers' military fan during half time. And that's when Lund came out from the opposite side of the field and gave her daughter the ultimate surprise.

"When she turned around and I saw the surprise in her face, I think that's what every parent lives for, to see my daughter again and have her back in my arms," Lund told ABCNews.

Lund plans to teach in Madison and stay in the Reserves.
