Ridgewood, New Jersey (My9News) -

Bergen County’s Ridgewood commuter group bikes to work in NYC.

Rob Kotch, organizes a group of bike riding commuters every morning from New Jersey into New York City. The commute is about 25 miles each day. The bicyclists meet up in Glenrock, NJ around 6:15 each morning and are on the road by 6:30am to make their way over to work in New York City.

The group bikes on back-roads that are parallel to route 4 in order to beat and avoid morning traffic. Kotch himself has been doing this commute for 12 years.

Recently, there have been a couple of accidents involving bikers being hit by motor vehicles. Michael Hughes, a championship racer has been involved in a few accidents. Hughes said that he has been rushed to the hospital a couple of times after getting hit while on the road. “For me, I got hit twice by a car. Fortunately, it was nothing serious. Just a little banged up.” He said.

As dangerous as this commute seems, these bikers are tackling America’s biggest problems; obesity, pollution, and the economy.

The town of Elmwood Park relies on about 75 to 100 volunteer firefighters for emergencies.  Russell Fenn, IV is one of those volunteer firefighters. He was driving the department’s only ladder truck and crashed it into utility poles.  Police charged Fenn with driving under the influence and said that his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
