Shaq & Booker Break Ground - My9 New Jersey

Shaq & Booker Break Ground

Posted: Updated:
Newark, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

NBA Legend Shaquille O'Neal came home to Newark to join Cory Booker in announcing that he's a partner in the first new high rise building built in Newark in 50 years. The building will be downtown on Rector Street. This is the second project that Shaq has developed in Newark and he says it certainly will not be his last. The first project was a movie theater.

Newark Mayor Booker pointed out that these are the type of private developments that Newark needs to be a first class city.

Shaq made it very clear that he fully backs Booker as a person and politician at times even referring to him as “Senator Booker” and “President Booker”. “He has aspirations, he’s an intelligent fellow he’s an ambition fellow and I wish him well. Mayor, Senator who knows, he has the charisma to run for President.” Shaq said.

The NBA star was born in Newark in 1972 and he credits his mother for inspiring him to give back to Newark. “I told my mother that I would help beautify the city and it means the world to me. One day we were just riding through and she said I wish somebody would just come back and help fix up Newark and that was my cue.” He said.

In other Booker news, Democratic strategist Brendan Gill chimed in on Booker’s recent twitter relationship with Portland Stripper Lynsie Lee. “He said so yesterday, someone showed him kindness and he returned that kindness in the form of a tweet. His use of Twitter is revolutionary. People feel that he is accessible and he is.” Gill said.

With Booker on his way out of Newark soon, whether to take over the open Senate seat or not, Gill says that New Jersey’s biggest city will have some adjusting to do. “I think the city itself has a big decision in front of it with the mayoral candidates. I think whoever is elected to that position is going to need to fill some of that space. The city has been under state control now for close to I think 25 years, so there are limitations in the chief executive of that city and what they can do to assess the quality of education, that’s number one.”

Gill believes that some of the biggest issues facing Newark are more than just the mayor’s problem. “I’m saying the state itself, the department of education and not only Governor Christie but past governors have to held to the same standard that you hold the mayor of that city as it pertains to the education and in fact that’s why there are many elected officials in the city of Newark who have advocated for return to control of that city.” Gill said.

Currently Booker holds a 12 point lead over Steve Lonegan in the special Senate election.
