Marjorie Perry’s a prime example of making lemonade when life gives you lemons, from her start as a teacher to her current position as the CEO and President of a profitable construction company.

From an early age, Perry’s father was a driving force in her life. He was a tough love kind of father, and she believes that discipline is what helped her later in life. “If you didn’t get it right you had to go back because everything had to be about excellence, even our chores.” She said.

Perry graduated from Barringer High School in Newark, and attended Kean College. She earned a B.A. in education, but her teaching career was cut short in 1974 with a series of layoffs within the Newark Public School system. She remembers trying to figure out what to do next. “I said well, what do I do next? And that was right around the time the corporate companies were looking for top women of color to come in and start diversifying what it looked like.” She said. Her first gig was with 3M, switching from teaching to sales and marketing.

She became highly successful with 3M, and that success followed her to Johnson & Johnson and United Airlines. In 1989 Perry decided to open up her own consulting firm, to help new entrepreneurs, called Map Productions. She worked there for a few years before she had an opportunity to be a part of something much bigger.

In 1992 Perry was approached by two men who wanted to start a construction company. She says she had little knowledge about construction, but learned quickly. She had no problem diving headfirst into the venture. “I knew how to run operations. So I had to learn by baptism by fire” She said.

This was the beginning of MZM Construction & Management, and eventually Perry bought out her two partners and became the sole leader of MZM. Now, Perry is the CEO and President of MZM, and has sustained a multi-million dollar bottom-line.

She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including selection as the 2012 New Jersey State Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration and induction into the 2012 New Jersey Business Hall of Fame.

Even with all its success, Perry is still dreaming bigger than ever. “Don’t even use the words “I can’t”. No limits. There are no limits in dreaming.” She said.

Diane Henderiks’ passion for food, nutrition, and exercise has driven her successful career. Henderik’s parents were a large influence on her love of food. Both of her parents were Italian and loved to cook, making hand-me down recipes a common thing in their kitchen. "My parents were both cooks, I think that’s where all my cooking stems from," She said. In 1988, Henderiks attended Monmouth University where she earned degrees in marking and management.
