NJ Democrats want quick gay marriage decision

Posted: Updated:

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey's Democratic legislative leaders want gay couples to know by next month whether they really can marry in the state. So they are calling on the state's highest court to take up gay marriage quickly.

A judge ruled Friday that the state must allow gay couples to wed starting Oct. 21. But Gov. Chris Christie said he would appeal the ruling.

On Monday, Democrats asked that the Supreme Court act quickly, though the court hasn't been petitioned yet.

Senate President Steve Sweeney said Democrats are also trying to round up the votes to override Christie's gay marriage veto.

Christie, a Republican who is a possible candidate for president in 2016, wants gay marriage to be decided by public vote.
