Tunnel To Towers Race - My9 New Jersey

Tunnel To Towers Race

Posted: Updated:
Brooklyn, New York (My9NJ) -

On Sunday, the Tunnel to Towers Race was held in New York City for those who lost their lives in 9/11 and the first responders. The race started in Brooklyn, traveling through the Brooklyn Tunnel to Ground Zero.

The foundation Tunnel to Towers was created in honor of Stephen Siller, who was a firefighter in Brooklyn when the first plane hit the Twin Towers. He tried to drive his truck through the Brooklyn Tunnel, but there was too much traffic to get through. Siller then suited up in all his gear and ran to the Towers, where he lost his life.

During the three mile race, firefighters wore their gear as they ran. Dakota Meyer, a United States veteran who received a Medal of Honor in 2009, ran the race in the boots he wore in Afghanistan.

When the runners came out of the Brooklyn Tunnel, 343 firefighters and policemen carried banners of all the first responders who lost their lives on 9/11. While inside the tunnel, the firefighters were chanting “U.S.A.”

A lot of people showed up to the race, including Boardwalk Empire star Steve Buscemi. He said, “I used to be a firefighter at Engine 55. They lost five of their members on 9/11 and so every year I try to do something for the firefighters.”

Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani was also there and talked about the first race in 2001. “I was at the first one back in 2001 when it was only about 800 people. I even had some doubt about whether we should do it because the tunnel was so crowded at the time.” He said. All of his worries went away when Giuliani met the Siller Family. “I realized this was something very, very special.” Giuliani said.

The money raised goes to housing for our most injured veterans. Donations can be made on their website: Tunnel2Towers.org.

Some residents of West New York, New Jersey are happy with their beautiful views of Manhattan, but aren’t too happy about the noise that is coming over from the city. Residents who live at the Hudson Club apartment complex at Port Imperial say that the music that reportedly comes from a new concert hall at Pier 97 across the Hudson River in New York City is affecting their quality of life.
