Domestic Violence Awareness Month - My9 New Jersey

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Posted: Updated:
Clinton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. You will notice purple ribbons on display throughout the Garden State which officially signifies support for those affected by domestic violence.

Janice Kovach is the Mayor of Clinton, New Jersey and a domestic abuse survivor who is working closely with the “clothesline project”. The “clothesline project” allows the victims of domestic violence and others to decorate shirts with messages of support.

Janice shared her story of domestic violence that occurred during her first marriage. She said that being a role model to her daughter is what helped her find the courage to leave.

“I had a 3 year old daughter at the time, and I thought there’s no way I want her feeling that she’s not empowered to do whatever she wants to do.” Kovach said.

Kovach also feels that she is one of the lucky ones. “I’m luckier than so many others. I got out.” She encouraged.

T-shirts in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month are on display at the Hunterdon County Library, North County Branch, where you can see the work of art done by so many supporters. The exhibit was coordinated by SAFE in Hunterdon, a group that supports the victims and survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, there are many services out there to help you. New Jersey provides domestic violence services. You can call their hotline at 1 (800) 572-SAFE (7233)
