“Roast Beef Thief” Gets Off

Posted: Updated:
Hopatcong, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Hopatcong Councilwoman Estelle Klein, who was caught blatantly shoplifting a roast beef by police, was in court yesterday. The judge decided her shoplifting and eluding police charges will be wiped off her record pending the completion of 50 hours of community service, a $125 fine, and 2 year probation.

Since the charges have been dropped, the Borough of Hopatcong is allowing her to stay on the borough council. Reportedly, she hasn’t been to a council meeting since her August 6th arrest. Klein, who just turned eighty, didn’t comment on the outcome.

Some believe that this is a case of a politician getting special treatment. Especially because a woman who holds a title like her on the borough council makes very important decisions that affect the community and incidents like this make some question her morals. Others feel like she is an 80-year old first-time offender and she shouldn’t be penalized. What are your thoughts?
