Coast Guard rescues fishermen from boat sinking off Montauk

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Coast Guard rescue boat saved three fishermen from a sinking boat off Gardiners Island, N.Y., during the stormy weather on Monday, the service said.

The 41-foot commercial fishing vessel Robert James, from Groton, Conn., was taking on water fast when a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Montauk arrived to help. The crew managed to pull the fishermen from the boat just before it went under, the Coast Guard said.

Winds were blowing 20 to 25 mph and seas were up to 3 feet, according to the Coast Guard, which decided the sea conditions were too dangerous to board the partially sunken fishing boat and try to save it, according to Petty Officer 2nd Class Brent Walsh.
