Buono Talks The Debate

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

New Jersey’s gubernatorial election is only a few weeks away and we already heard the first of two debates between Senator Barbara Buono and current Governor Chris Christie.

Many feel like this debate proved that Buono could hold her own amongst Christie who is often referred to as a “bully”.

The current polls show that Buono is anywhere from 20 to 28 points behind Christie, but these numbers aren’t discouraging the Senator. “These races are always won in the last three weeks and I’m not bothered by the fact that he’s running for President because he obviously is. What bothers me, and I said it last night, is how he’s running for president. He’s putting his national ambitions ahead of what is best for New Jersey.” She said.

Buono went on to discuss how she takes some of Christie’s actions personally. “He vetoed funding for women’s health care funding for several years in a row and the fact of the matter is I take it personally, I relied on planned parenthood when I was in college, I was on my own, paid for my own college and law school. I didn’t have insurance and this is all because of the conservative base of the National Republican Party has the war on women going on.” She said.

Even though Christie takes strong Republican stances, he still has about 30% of the democratic force backing him in this election. Buono still isn’t fazed. “It’s about personality. The pocketbook issues, jobs and the economy. His approval numbers are quite low, on taxes, property taxes they’re in the high 30’s, so really the issue is to focus people on what is going on. This is about our lives and our children’s lives.” She said.

In regards to the debate, Buono feels like she didn’t get the chance to discuss some issues that were very important to her. “We didn’t talk about the governor’s hostile attitude toward issues that impact on women. The fact is women’s issues aren’t just women’s issues, they are family issues. We are the primary breadwinners or the co-primary breadwinners in more and more families and his vetoing of the minimum wage affects women in a real way. His cutting women’s health affects women in a very real and discernable way. His belief that we don’t deserve equal pay for equal work, he vetoed legislation that would have narrowed that gender wage gap and called it senseless bureaucracy.” Buono thinks it’s absurd that politicians should make our health care decisions.

During the debate Buono was asked to say something nice about Governor Christie and she commented on how well he is on late night TV. Many people feel like this was a low-blow. Buono came to her own defense. “I’m thrilled that the governor is good with his wisecracks at night, but the fact of the matter is that this election is about more than just reality TV. Do we really need another reality TV show? I mean we already have “The Situation” do we really need “The Governor”, I don’t think so.” She said.

To be clear, 49 Democratic elected officials, including 18 mayors are backing Governor Christie in the upcoming election. So when it comes to the Democratic Party, why are many of them not backing their own?
