GWB Lane Closures Controversy - My9 New Jersey

GWB Lane Closures Controversy

Posted: Updated:
Fort Lee, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

New Jersey Senator Loretta Weinberg is leading the charge against the port authority along with other Senators and local Freeholders, calling lane closures of two Fort Lee George Washington Bridge toll lanes unjustified and possibly an act of political retribution against political opponents.

The Port Authority closed two of three lanes in Fort Lee for 4 days starting September 9th, resulting in gridlock traffic. One month later, there is still not clear explanation on the reason behind the closure.

Originally Port Authority spokespeople said the closings were due to a “traffic study”, a statement Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni, a Christie appointee, backed up. Then the Executive Director, Patrick Foye, an appointee of New York Governor Cuomo, sent out a scathing letter to the whole agency saying that there was no traffic study. The letter continued to say that the closures might be illegal, and it goes against everything the authority stands for.

Tom Sokolich, Mayor of Fort Lee, reportedly wondered if the closures were retribution against him by Governor Christie’s port authority appointees for not supporting Governor Christie.

Senator Loretta Weinberg says that the fact that the port authority hasn’t given a clear answer on the reason for the closure makes them very suspicious. “To be clear, what makes the most sense here is that this is about people at the port authority doing what they’re not supposed to be doing…If in fact anybody is using the government processes to punish people for partisan political reasons, that really undermines our democracy.” She said.

Weinberg is being joined by others like Senator Bill Pascrell and several local Freeholders in getting to the bottom of this issue.

On the other hand, some have suggested that this may be a way for Weinberg, a Barbara Buono supporter, to knock Christie right before the election.

There is still no word from port authority on why those lanes were closed and inconvenienced thousands of Jersey commuters last month.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
