NJ Rabbi Arrests

Posted: Updated:
Lakewood, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

There are some serious allegations regarding torturous behavior that is allegedly taking place in Rabbi Mendel Epstein’s home in Lakewood, New Jersey. He along with another rabbi and 8 other men are allegedly involved in helping Orthodox Jewish women who are seeking a divorce confront their husbands with the use of force, sometimes allegedly even using a cattle prod.

In the Orthodox Jewish faith a man has to grant the divorce, which is called a “get”. And it seems that if the husband won’t grant the divorce, a woman might use force to get him to grant it. In this case, the force allegedly turned into torture.

This group of men is allegedly being charged in a torture-for-hire operation which included threats of kidnapping, beatings and the use of weapons like knives, shotguns and handcuffs. The goal—to convince Orthodox Jewish husbands to grant their wives a divorce.

It is believed that these men allegedly conducted several dozen of these torture acts over a period of many years.

A member of the Orthodox Jewish community who wanted to remain anonymous discussed these procedures. He said that the idea of using force to obtain a get “isn’t news.” “What’s news is that these guys were really going to the extreme.” He said.

All 10 accused men appeared in federal court in Trenton on Thursday and were held without bail. A preliminary hearing will talk place on October 18th in Trenton.

Yesterday was Earth Day and people all across New Jersey took time to celebrate Mother Earth. Founder of the Astor Free Community Garden in Jersey City, Tinina Bland, organized a day of gardening with some of the city’s hardest working two and three year olds. “We reach out throughout the entire community, we grow collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, four different types of tomatoes, watermelon, pumpkin and this year we’re introducing fruit,” Bland explained.
