Sadly, Mayor Cory Booker received tragic news last week about the untimely passing of his father.

While Booker is clearly working the campaign trail hard to win the upcoming Senate election, all of his events were postponed to take care of the unfortunate family matter that arose.

Democratic Strategist Tara Dowdell spoke on behalf of the upcoming election and how the next 72 hours are extremely crucial for a candidate to get their message out and encourage people to vote. In light of Booker’s father’s death, could his absence from the campaign trail effect the election? “I think that the mayor should, as he is doing, take care of his family matters first. That takes precedence. Also I think that Steve Lonegan needs to be very careful. The mayor is dealing with the loss of his father and he needs to be sensitive to that.” Dowdell said.

Right now Booker is only 12 points ahead of Lonegan in the polls, a number that is a lot smaller than Booker and many other Democrats would have anticipated this close to the election. Lonegan is even pulling out all the stops and having some national political figures like Sarah Palin come out to campaign for him as well.

“For one thing he’s getting a ton of earned media from this and he is benefiting from the media and him not having to pay for it. On the other side though, he has to be very careful with having people like Sarah Palin who is a very decisive figure and is not viewed very favorably in New Jersey, he has to be very careful about people like that coming in.” Dowdell said.

Dowdell also chimed in on the upcoming gubernatorial election and the fact that a Republican Governor seems to be running away with that election in a blue state. “I think it’s a reflection of Chris Christie’s popularity in New Jersey. He made some missteps in running ads where he sort of declared victory saying that everything’s fines on the Jersey shore when there are a lot of people who still aren’t in their homes and also it has to be noted the NJ has a higher unemployment rate than the national average, so Governor Christie has benefited, I call him the Teflon governor.” She said.
