FOX 29 Helps Neighborhood With Clean-Up

Posted: Updated:

FOX 29 is getting results for folks in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section who are tired of seeing their neighborhood turned into a trash dump!

After months of calling the city, without success, they turned to FOX 29s Bruce Gordon.

Most folks do what they can to keep their neighborhood clean it sends a message to visitors that you'd better behave yourself, because we care about what goes on around here.

But when the trash piles start to grow, prostitutes and drug users know its open season.

Michelle Goldsmith pulls out all the stops to create a ghoulish decor around her Witte Street home each Halloween, but the most horrifying site in this neighborhood is at the end of the block, where weeds, trash and illegally dumped construction debris make an eyesore of the neighborhood.

"I've picked up condoms. I've had to pick up needles. It's just awful. It really is awful," Goldsmith said.

This two-block stretch of Pacific Street at Witte, borders an underused factory site, where graffiti mars the walls and the weeds haven't been cut in months.

Neighbors say the mess, coupled with a broken streetlight overhead, creates the perfect environment for drug use and prostitution.

"It's like a free-for-all. They know nobody's here. They know they can do whatever they want to, to our neighborhood, and that's wrong," Cathy Dos Santos, a neighbor said.

"And it's funny because you call the city and they say, 'yeah, we're gonna take care of it!' They don't show up," Walex Tellado, another neighbor said. "It's a shame, you know? We should be able to have our communities clean so the kids could go out and play."

These folks are kind of at their wits' end, with all the dumping and the weeds and so forth. Bruce Gordon called the city, He then noticed a New York phone number on a rental sign around the front of the factory.

He got on the phone with the owner and pleaded the neighbors' case, and that led to a promise.

Next Monday morning, this place is going to be cleaned up guaranteed.

We'll be back to make sure that promise is kept. Meanwhile, the head of the city's Community Life Improvement Program returned Bruce's call late this afternoon.

Tom Conway says the property owner will be cited for those big weeds. Conway's getting a graffiti clean up team out there, and will get the streets department to fix the streetlight at Witte and Pacific.

These folks deserve a decent neighborhood, and they're about to get it.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
