Double Dipping Sheriffs - My9 New Jersey

Double Dipping Sheriffs

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Mark Lagerkvist, an investigator and reporter for NJ Watchdog has reported that sheriffs in New Jersey are double dipping, which means they are getting a salary from the county as well as a pension.

Lagervist has studied all twenty-one counties in NJ and said, “80% of the sheriffs in New Jersey are what we call, double dipping. They’re getting a paycheck and pensions…17 out of 21 county sheriffs in NJ are double dipping.”

When you get a pension, it’s usually a contract of a fixed sum that is distributed to people who are retired. However, that’s not the case here. “They’re getting a pension and they aren’t retired. They’re still working; they’re still getting six figured salaries,” he said.

Sheriff re-elections are coming around the corner and Lagervist spilled the details on one of New Jersey’s biggest double dipping offenders. Sheriff Michael Saudino’s salary is $138,000 and his pension is $129,984, thus making a grand total of $267,984 per year.

“This sort of greed knows no political boundaries. What you have is, you have 8 democrats, and 9 republicans who are doing this, so it’s not a party issue, and it’s not a partisan issue, it’s just an issue of them wanting money in their pockets,” Lagerkvist said.

In February 2011, there was an attempt done by the legislatures who were trying to change the law and to not allow double dipping. However, once the bill was in the senate hands, it never made it out of the committee. The way the law would have worked was, people who were receiving pensions while having a public job, would have had their state pension suspended if they were making over $15 thousand a year.

The irony of the bill never passing through is at that time, 18 of the voting legislatures on that case were also double dipping.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
