Beauty Queen Domestic Violence

Waldwick, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

There are a lot of questions that still remain regarding the tragic murder of former New Jersey Miss Teen USA contestant Mary Greff.

Her ex-boyfriend Mark Spatucci has officially been charged with Greff’s murder which is believed to have been via strangulation.

The question that remains however is what is going to happen to her infant son Mark? Will Greff’s parents retain custody of the baby or will Spatucci’s family fight for their rights as grandparents as well?

It seems like the whole community of Waldwick, New Jersey has come together during this tragic time. A baby Mark fundraiser has been established in which the organization is aiming to raise at least $5,000 by the end of the year to help Mark have a better chance at life.

The wake for Greff will be held today in Wyckoff and the funeral is set for October 30th in Ridgewood.

Family Therapist and Domestic Violence Specialist Amy Geller chimed in on this horrific situation. “I believe that women are at the highest risk of death when they leave a violent relationship. You cannot just leave you have to get help,” she said.

Unfortunately, the options for women in domestic violence situations are slim and one of the best ways to avoid additional harm would have to be to go into hiding.

Statics show that 1 New Jersey resident is affected by domestic violence every 7 minutes.

In fact, just last week April Wycoff was murdered, and her body was just recently found. Her boyfriend, Matthew Ballister, has been charged with the murder.

Janice Kovach the Mayor of Clinton, New Jersey discussed some of the domestic violence warning signs. “So what is it that they should look for? Friends, relatives, it’s about control. When they lose control of the person that they are in the relationship with that’s when it starts to escalate. What to look for is if a woman starts to withdraw, especially from her family and friends. If you find that she’s more careful with how she speaks and can’t do something without asking first,” she said.

Kovach feels like domestic violence is an epidemic and that more awareness needs to be brought to light about how these kinds of situations affect the lives of women and how dangerous it can really be for them.

The knockout game where young people randomly punch innocent bystanders to see if they can knock them unconscious has been relatively rare in New Jersey, until now. After three attacks in less than half an hour in a safe Hackensack neighborhood, some residents are concerned that this trend will pose potential problems for more New Jerseyans. Hackensack police are looking for a man caught on surveillance video who is suspected of the three separate assaults.
