NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

NYU student Asher Vongtau was loaded into an ambulance on Sunday, miraculously conscious after falling from his dorm and ending up trapped between two buildings for more than a day.

FDNY Deputy Chief Joseph Schiralli said Vongtau was conscious and moving when he was rescued.

"Right now we don't know how he got in the shaft but he was there a minimum of a day, could have been longer," Schiralli says.

The FDNY released a photo of the narrow space where Vongtau had been trapped between a dorm and a parking garage on Franklin Street.

The space was less than two feet wide and they had to break a wall to get to him.

NYU officials say Vongtau was reported missing last night but it wasn't until this evening that a public safety officer found him in the crawl space and the dramatic rescue got underway.

His friends said they reported him missing to security around midnight, 18 hours after he was seen.

By Sunday afternoon they were frantic to find him.

One friend said he was trying to get in contact with him all day but couldn't. "His phone was off it was hard to get in touch," he said. "I spent the last 4 hours walking up and down the street praying I'd find him."

It took first responders an hour and a half to reach him.

His friends say they worry had it taken any longer, he might not have made it.  He is recovering at Bellevue Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The university released a statement saying:  "The circumstances of how the student came to be in this space are unclear to us. We are very glad to say the least that student was found and rescued, pleased that his condition was such that he was able to remain conscious and alert during the rescue, grateful to the FDNY and NYPD for their quick response and excellent work, and proud of our Public Safety officer for looking in what would have been an unlikely spot for a student to be."

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is holding its monthly board meeting, two days after it heard from a panel on what it needs to do to improve its accountability and efficiency and restore public trust.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
