Man Goes Back Into Fire, Dies Trying To Save 7 Dogs

ELMHURST, Del. -

Flames tore right through a Delaware home on Saturday, killing a man and several of his dogs.

The blaze broke out Saturday afternoon on the 300 block of West Summit Avenue in Elmhurst, just outside of Wilmington.

Investigators were at the scene, trying to figure out how the intense flames killed 36-year-old Nate Lewandowski , a pitbull and six puppies, according to Ed Strickland, who lives next door.

Strickland rushed over to help out. He went to the door, and called his neighbor's name but did not hear his voice. He said he did, however, hear the heart-wrenching sound of puppies inside.

Strickland says Lewandowski originally got out, but went back in to save the dogs.

His neighbor was pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital.

More than half a dozen fire crews answered the call which included blasts reported at the house. It's believed a gas or propane tank exacerbated the flames.

The state fire marshal now investigating, including a reconstruction of the fire scene.

Fire officials say the exact cause of death is pending, but they say it looks to be the 11th fire death in the state of Delaware so far this year.

    Cooler and drier air moves in today but the heat and humidity return for the second half of the holiday weekend.

    A cold front came through last night meaning cooler, less humid air is moving in for Thursday.  Mostly sunny skies and winds gusting to 25mph are also expected today.  Friday starts off very cool and also features a pleasant afternoon.
