Is My Car Spying On Me?

Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

With so much talk about surveillance, especially with the information from whistleblower Edward Snowden who informed the public that the NSA was tracking both their phone call records and all of their online activity, it seems there is almost no privacy at all. In fact, it seems that now your car can’t even provide you with privacy. Data from your cars, such as what music you’re listening to or where you’re going is being collected.

Jim Lardear of AAA MidAtlantic says that people don’t know what data is being collected or if they want their data to be shared. “It’s a consumer rights and privacy issue. They need to be aware that their car is generating data,” he said.

Dan Bowmen of Sound Auto in Haledon, has been installing all manners of electronics into cars for decades. Bowmen says that data collection isn’t something that should worry people. The data on your car is minimal and safety oriented. “It basically seems like its things to make sure that the vehicle is operating as it should be. If there is a failure, why did it fail? What was happening?” he said.

According to Harris Technical Services, the “black box” that comes in most cars rebuffers every five seconds and preserves the moment of impact in case of a crash. They also said there are fourteen states that have vehicle data ownership laws, but New Jersey is not one of them.

Data can be a large part of a company’s profit. Last year, OnStar changed their privacy policy to allow them to take their customers’ data and sell it. Their profits were up last year, most likely due to the data collection.

Some people aren’t burdened by the idea that a company knows what music they’re listening to or where they go. People seem to be obsessed with privacy, but when you’re in a public sector like driving your car, privacy doesn’t seem like a possibility.
