Community Donates Hair For Cancer Research

SAN FRANCISCO -

In a bold demonstration of support for children fighting cancer, people came together in San Francisco for a head-shaving event.

FOX's John Sasaki has the heart-warming story.

A family haircut is nothing new, but a mother and daughter going bald together is unusual.

Terese Calvo and her husband Jake both had their heads shaved today to help raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which funds children's cancer research. Their 14 year old daughter Tori are being treated for cancer at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.

"It's an emotional day, but we're finally happy that we can share, be with Tori and stand with her," Terese said.

Carl Krawitt gave up his hair for his 5 year old son, Rhett, who is a patient.

"Yesterday was an emotional day for us with the Batkid running around the city. And he had the exact same disease that my son has. And he's cured. And it's because of this kind of research" Krawitt said,

The hospital's chief of pediatric oncology also went under the clippers for her patients.

And I'm going to go out there and walk around and people are going to look at me. And that's going to be another way that I can get one step closer to them and feel what they go through.

Almost everyone was tied to the hospital except a high school student from Loomis, who raised $1600 and brought a heartfelt message.

This event raised more than $22,000 for St. Baldrick's which over the years has given about $3 million dollars to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital for Children's Cancer Research.
