Gender Discrimination at NJ Golf Course - My9 New Jersey

Gender Discrimination at NJ Golf Course

Posted: Updated:
Edison, NJ (My9NJ) -

The Plainfield Country Club, one of the words oldest and most prestigious golf courses in New Jersey is being sued for alleged gender discrimination.

It seems the country club has got themselves in a sticky situation when it comes to discriminating against women and treating them as second class citizens.

Concerns were raised when, Liza Garrubbo, former member of the country club and her husband, Joseph Garrubbo, who is currently still a member, decided to bring attention to the fact that women don’t have the same privileges at the club as men do.

Traditionally, golf is a male dominated sport which has been known to have a culture that restricts women.

“It has been a restrictive sport and I just want to see the disparate impact and for women to have modern access. USGA believes in pace of play, if you can golf in 4 hours, you should be allowed to get on that golf course and get your round in,” Liza said.

Her husband backed her up. “The problem with the Plainfield Country Club is that they treat the wives of members as second class citizens,” he said.

Garrubbo went on to explain how club membership ranks are part of the problem. “The club creates categories of membership and the wives of active members are categorized as associate golfing members, essentially that makes them second class citizens at Plainfield,” he said.

Liza was trying to promote equal membership at the country club which would include such things as prime time tee-times for both men and women so they could golf together, as well as getting women who are members at the club to have the same privileges and benefits as the male members.

The Garrubbo’s attorney received a nasty voicemail left by the Plainfield Country Club President, Paul Sauchelli which was filled with profanity. Garubbo claims that Sauchelli is angry at their efforts to appoint a woman to the clubs committee in order to make changes, which then resulted in Liza’s loss of membership at the club. Sauchelli told her that if she wants to return, she has to apologize.
