Christie Sworn In As RGA Chair

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Governor Chris Christie is in Arizona for the National Republican Governor’s Association annual meeting. He was sworn in as the Chairman of the RGA, replacing Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. As part of his duties as chairman, Christie will travel the country and campaign for Republican governors up for re-election this year.

Former Iowa Governor Chet Culver says it’s a great honor to be selected as the head of the RGA or the DGA. He also says being selected as chairman is very beneficial.

“It does give that governor a real platform in terms of national prominence,” Culver said.

Even though this honor will give Christie a bigger platform if he wants to run for presidency, some people believe that Christie’s aggressive attitude and New Jersey flare may be too much for people of Iowa and the Midwest. Culver believes that the people of Iowa haven’t had the chance to truly meet Christie yet to really make their decision about him.

“Every part of the country is a little bit different, but one of the great things about the Iowa Caucus, whether it’s the Republican Caucus or the Democratic Caucus, is it gives candidates a chance to come meet directly with the voters,” he said.

The Iowa Caucus is essentially a meeting place for candidates and it’s an opportunity to refine their message. “I welcome Governor Christie and Hilary Clinton and others to come to our state early and often to become a better candidate and to take those tough questions directly from the people of Iowa,” Culver said.

Christie has been out of the state a lot lately, and some people feel that if he is truly putting New Jersey first, he should be in New Jersey. Even though Culver believes this is a fair point, he says traveling around the country has its benefits.

“It also arguably helps your state. You have your governor out there talking about New Jersey in places like Iowa and other parts of the country, talking to businesses, trying to encourage them to come back to your state. So it can work well on the political end and the policy side,” he said.

Yesterday was Earth Day and people all across New Jersey took time to celebrate Mother Earth. Founder of the Astor Free Community Garden in Jersey City, Tinina Bland, organized a day of gardening with some of the city’s hardest working two and three year olds. “We reach out throughout the entire community, we grow collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, four different types of tomatoes, watermelon, pumpkin and this year we’re introducing fruit,” Bland explained.
