Venezuelan woman: I was wrongly held at NYC Macy's

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) — A Venezuelan woman says she was wrongly accused of shoplifting at Macy's in New York City and held for hours in a detention cell in the store.

Maria Paez spoke Tuesday in the Manhattan offices of her lawyer, Herbert Subin.

She said she went to Macy's flagship store on Sept. 12. She says she placed items in a Macy's bag to carry from one spot to another in the store.

Paez says she was grabbed from behind, handcuffed and locked in a tiny holding cell.

She says Macy's officials told her to sign a confession and pay $500.

Paez says she was profiled because she was speaking Spanish. She speaks no English.

Paez has been charged with petit larceny and possession of stolen property. She's due back in court in February.

A spokeswoman says Macy's cannot comment.

You've got a few more weeks to enjoy SummerStage, New York's annual performing arts showcase that's 28 years running. But it's not just music: there is dance, comedy, theater, you name it. There are several shows weekly at 14 different parks throughout the five boroughs. A recent show at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park paid tribute to Pete Seeger. Most of the shows are free and are funded by tickets purchased for the some of the bigger acts.
