Sales Ring Up During Small Business Saturday

Carolers belted out tunes on  Kings Highway as retailers rang up sales inside their stores during "Small Business Saturday " in Haddonfield, New Jersey.

this is the fourth year for the campaign started by American Express. The day quickly becoming  Black Friday for small businesses.

"I come out because  a lot of these shop owners are people I know
my kids go to school with their kids,  so really I'm supporting the local

Alexis Langella, co-owner of Jax   boutique is already seeing more Saturday shoppers than previous weekends thanks to the day geared around shopping local.

"Today since there is a draw for small business  we have people
coming  in all day long so that's great for us," said an elated Langella.

The Small Business Administration says America's 28 million mom and pop shops create 66%  of new private sector jobs.

One reason why Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter toured Fishtown's shopping corridors on Frankford and Girard urging people to shop local.

"Small businesses revitalize neighborhoods put people to work. They help the city economy."

"Sarah Lewis  owns Adorn jewelry boutique--one of the crown jewels of Fishtown's revitalization.

The 29-year-old resident an example of why American express says 50-percent of the money spent in smaller stores like hers are recycled back into the community.

"I barely ever leave the neighborhood," said Lewis. "I do my yoga and  grocery shopping
here in Fishtown. It's  a very neighborhoody community.

One study shows that of every $100 spent at local stores $68 stays in that same community vs. $43 for chain stores.
