NJ Roller Derby - My9 New Jersey

NJ Roller Derby

Posted: Updated:
Deptford, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The sport of roller derby is very much alive and well in New Jersey.

Skater Lil’ Miss Defy of the South Jersey Derby Girls broke down the fun of roller derby. Roller derby is “hitting people and not getting in trouble,” she said.

Roller derby consists of teams of five who skate against each other in ninety second jams. Teams score points by pushing one fast skater, called the jammer, around the rink while preventing the other team’s jammer from passing. Teams can either be gender specific or co-ed.

Roller derby isn’t just about hitting each other and skating fast. Penny Fastlane, one of the South Jersey Derby Girls, says roller derby is a great stress reliever. “Here we come and let loose, let the stress go. Hitting each other, beating each other, no one holds grudges against each other,” she said.

The race in Newark to replace now Senator Cory Booker is getting publicity for all the wrong reasons. Some are choking it up to dirty politics with campaign buses being torched, offices being broken into and inappropriate fliers circulating around town encouraging people to “vote black”, even though both candidates are African American. With many people questioning what is going on in Newark, former Mayor Sharpe James chimed in to discuss the city’s current political landscape.
